Frequently asked questions during the COVID-19 pandemic

During this unprecedented time, we are receiving many questions regarding how Lemon Aide and Maison Apothecare can help defend against the virus.

Are Lemon Aide and Maison Apothecare products effective in preventing COVID-19?

Yes.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), our hand washes, soap bars, dish liquid, and surface cleaners will help prevent the spread of this virus and pathogens.  The key is to allow the soap (aka, Hand Wash, Dish Liquid, Surface Cleaner, Soap Bar) time to work.  For washing hands, the WHO says soap must be massaged into hands for 20 seconds followed by rinsing the virus away with water.   This video examines why this is the case.

In terms of skin health, oils and lotions are also helpful in replenishing a healthy membrane (skin), which if cracked or broken allows pathogens into body.

Is Lemon Aide Surface Cleaner effective for cleaning COVID-19, preventing the spread?

Yes. There are 4 types of ingredients that can be used in cleaning products to prevent spread of COVID-19:  either soap in water, 60% alcohol-based products, 3% peroxide, or 10% bleach.   Lemon Aide Surface, Floor, and Glass cleaners all contain enough sodium hydroxide soap to fight COVID-19.  We recommend leaving products on for 3 minutes before wiping with warm cloth for best results.  The following ingredients some have been DIY'ing have NOT been proven to kill COVID-19:  essential oils, vinegar, water.
The simple combination of soap and water remains one of the strongest weapons against infectious diseases, including the novel corona virus.

Are bar soaps effective for preventing the spread of COVID-19?

Yes, they most certainly are just as effective.  Further more, they are better for the environment with less packaging and 25% more cost effective than liquid soap.  A recent article from McGill University published this piece on the topic:
Hand washing is just as effective whether using liquid soap or bar soap.

Will any anti-bacterial cleaning product kill COVID-19 on surface?

No.  Some products use citric acid to combat germs but this natural ingredient is only effective at killing bacteria.  Soap is best!

How can essential oils help with COVID-19?

While they have no proven effect on COVID-19, a 2017 study showed that a potent combination of Rosemary, Cinnamon & Eucalyptus essential oils were proven to be anti-viral https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5552930/ however there is equally evidence that essential oils can help with stress and anxiety by calming the nervous system and allowing us to feel connected to nature.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6007527/

This pandemic is certainly alarming on a number of levels and many people who previously enjoyed using natural eco-friendly household products have reverted back to using harsh chemicals.  We can't forget about the environmental impacts of the products we use and the health impact frequent use of chemicals have on our families.  During these stressful times, it's important to keep a balanced approach and to maintain health by not overusing chemicals.
